Can You Hear Me? by Elena Varvello
Translated by Alex Valente
August is Women in Translation month – and my review of this debut novel by Italian author Elena Varvello is over at Shiny New Books.
A combination of psychothriller and coming of age story that works, brilliantly, these two theme entwine around each other, generating terrific suspense. You really care about Elia, the teenaged narrator, but all the characters are drawn sympathetically.
Truly unputdownable, it goes straight onto my best of the year list.

Ha, great minds review in tandem – just finished this last night and reviewed it this morning!
I saw. It’s a wonderful book. Loved it – as you did too.
Great review Annabel – I would have commented on the Shiny site but for some reason it’s rejecting my attempts as spam!
Thanks Karen. Sorry about the comments business, several other people have had problems too. I’m at a loss, but have turned the Jetpack comments form off so back to default – hope that works.
