October Wrap-up and November Plans

Feels like I’m behind on everything this month – too many distractions! I only read nine books above, of which I’ve only managed to write reviews for two! While there were no duds in that pile at all, I’m finding it hard to decide what to say about the others, and you know me – I write something about everything I read (eventually!). I hope that I can pick up on some of the slack this month.

Novellas Pile 1

If you’re into challenges and reading weeks, November is the month when it’s all happening. I plan to concentrate on #NovNov – Novellas in November, now hosted now by Cathy and Rebecca. I’ve made two piles of novellas to your right and below (there are loads more on my shelves, for I do like novellas a lot).

In that pile are several non-fiction ones, which would fit in nicely with Nonfiction November too.

If it just so happens that any of those novellas fit in with any other reading challenges and themes, then all well and good, but I’m not formally planning to join in with any of the others, but if by happy coincidence it happens then that’s lovely.

So, if all goes to plan now we’re all in lockdown again, although I’ll still be in school, I’ll be reading more from my shelves and fewer review copies this month bar the new Jonathan Coe novel, Mr Wilder & Me (I’ll have to check, it’s not very long – it could just about be a novella?).

Novellas Pile 2 – but more where these came from!

P.S. Announced this morning, the five-strong shortlist for the Sunday Times Young Writer of the Year Award in assoc with the Uni of Warwick

I’ve not read any of them, but hope to get my hands on copies of a couple. It’s a shame, but there doesn’t appear to be a Shadow Panel of bloggers this year. I hope that can be resurrected next year.

What glorious stacks! I really enjoyed Swallowing Mercury, and Academy Street is a just about perfect book. I’m going to be reviewing Rest and Be Thankful for an American outlet in December, but I have it as an e-book.

I love Barker too. I am Sovereign is just over 200 pages in hardback – but there’s not much on a page, so I might stretch it to fit in…

I got that copy of Academy Street from a charity shop. It’s sat on the shelf ever since. As everyone loves it so much, I must read that one!

I’m looking to see if I can fit in at least one novella in November, but we’ll see, and ditto for non-fiction. (Says the man who has declared he is eschewing most events and challenges…)

A wonderful stack of novellas there. That’s the challenge I am concentrating on in November. I just started Surfacing by Margaret Atwood which ticks off MARM too.
