Library Loans #2

Hot on the heels of my reviews yesterday of the first books I borrowed from the library, I returned them this afternoon – and picked up five more…

The Waters & The Wild by DeSales Harrison – An American novel published here last year, described as “a bewitching literary suspense debut, rich in atmosphere and Gothic overtones.” This one was displayed face out on the shelf and the cover selected itself. In it, a girl dies and her psychoanalyst starts getting missives – then his own daughter goes missing and Daniel is caught up in an “elaborate and calculated torment.”

T Singer by Dag Solstad – I read Professor Andersen’s Night by Solstad some years ago, reviewed here. Although I didn’t love that book, I was willing to give him another chance, with a different translator this time. This book follows the life of a librarian whose relationship is about to break up when a car accident takes his life in a different direction.

Sweetbitter by Stephanie Danler – Rebecca reviewed this for Shiny New Books here and it’s been on my wishlist ever since. 22-year-old Tess arrives in New York and lands a job working at a renowned restaurant – where her appetite for life is awakened, but disillusionment is always lurking around the corner. I can’t wait to read this one.

Modern Gods by Nick Laird – Two sisters – Alison who is still stuck in the town in Northern Ireland where she was born – and Liz, now a college professor in New York. Alison is about to get married again and Liz is coming over for the wedding before going to Papua New Guinea to make a TV show. Both women’s lives get shaken apart and drama ensues.

Things We Nearly Knew by Jim Powell – I grabbed this book because I know Susan loved it, and I enjoyed Powell’s previous novel Trading Futures too. It wasn’t until I got it home that I discovered I’d picked up a large print edition, which could be a challenge to read as the balance of white space to text is rather lower than usual and the pages are rather busy looking in their larger font. But I’ll give it a go – hold it further away perhaps!

Which would you read first?

I keep renewing library books, again and again, as I get distracted by all the tbr books that stare me in the face. However, I’m determined to get round to the two loans I currently have sometime in February—after all, I am on the committee of the Friends of our local library and I ought to support the institution by helping keep it’s issue numbers up!
