Friday Face-Off Tag – Comparing cover art…

I discovered this weekly tag through a Book Connectors post on FB, anything to avoid writing reviews which are such hard work! The tag was created by Books by Proxy and currently hosted by Lynn’s Book Blog. This week’s theme is ‘a book with a romance that you’ve enjoyed’ (next week’s is ‘something furry’. It works like this:

This is a great opportunity to feature some of your favourite book covers.  The rules are fairly simple each week, following a predetermined theme (list here) choose a book or books, compare a couple of the different covers available and choose your favourite.

So I’ve chosen Mimi by Lucy Ellmann – read my full review HERE (and no, I’ve still not made the time to embark on Ducks, Newburyport). This book divided the critics (read the NY Times review here – it made me laugh), but I really enjoyed it – it was the first book that came to mind when I read the theme. However, having found a book to explore cover art of, I have shot myself in the foot slightly, for I could only find three covers in total – but I do have a definite favourite – here they are:

Original UK large flapped pbk
US edition
UK paperback

The UK paperback reflects the story of how Mimi and Harrison meet – on a snowy evening in NYC, the US edition reflects Mimi’s quirky character, but I like the cleanness of the original, which tells us it’s set in NYC, and signals a romance. (I like the ubiquitous red balloon on all though).

Have you read this book? Do you have a cover preference?

Lucy Ellman, Mimi, (Bloomsbury, 2013), 344 pages. BUY at Blackwell’s via affiliate link (free UK P&P).

We think is a GREAT idea to present and review bookcovers. We often talked weeks with our editors and the sales department the covers of our books. Quite often we have the feeling that the cover-designers haven’t really read the book. We just got from our publisher John Banville’s “Snow”. That’s a cover design we really like.
    Thanks for sharing.
    All the best.

Lovely to meet you. Thank you for coming by. The Banville is on my reading piles, I like that cover too.

I haven’t read Mimi but it looks like this is one of those times when I prefer the UK cover to the US (I’m usually much more of a fan of US covers). I think I actually slightly prefer the new UK paperback, but both work well.

The balloon feels too photoshopped on in the main paperback for me! I rarely prefer US covers – I tend to find them over-florid in type choice. 😀
