Coming in January – Echoes of Eco

Inspired by the comments on my post the other day on this month’s Six Degrees of Separation tag, I’ve decided to set myself a little project for January, and you’re all welcome to join in.  The starting book for the tag this month was Vanity Fair – and much as I’d love to read that for the first time, I don’t own a copy at the moment.

My original Picador paperback
Folio Society edition, which I shall read from this time.

However, one of my links took me to Umberto Eco’s The Name of the Rose, which I first read when it came out in paperback back in 1984. It’s a book I’ve long been planning to re-read, and looking at the comments, it’s one many of you would like to revisit (or visit for the first time too).

So in January, I’m going to re-read The Name of the Rose – taking my time over the month to savour this modern classic. The book is written in seven sections (‘days’), the last being very short, so although I won’t impose a rigid framework on myself, I will vaguely aim to post every other ‘day’ of the book.

You’re very welcome to join me, as re-reader or new reader, and of course use my header.

Thanks! I think I raced through it, skimming a lot of the historical stuff to follow the central mystery. I know that I’d read it more thoroughly now thirty odd years later(!) Fingers crossed.

Fab! It’ll be go at your own pace – I’ll spread mine out over a few weeks, and post regularly here I hope.

Ooooh – very tempted… I’ll have to see what else I have planned in January! 😁

I’ll join you, too. I’m planning on re-reading at least 6 pre-blog books during 2019, so this fits in nicely.

I have a copy tucked away somewhere, and I’d love to read it again because I loved it first time around. I’m not great at sticking to reading plans these days, so I’ll just say that it’s definitely a possibility …

It’ll be a read at your own pace readalong with some posts here and whatever else you want to do. I hope to spread it over about 3 weeks.

I’m in! I too know I skipped through much of the scholarly ruminations — especially about humour — when I first read this way back when. Just a little confused: are you proposing to read and then comment about a chapter every other day or have I missed your meaning? That would mean this spreading over a fortnight, is that right?

It’ll be lovely to have you along. Sorry for confusing you. My plan would be to read a couple of chunks week for about 3 weeks (probably), each chunk being 2 or 3 of the ‘days’ the book is written in. But please do read and post at whatever pace suits you.

I’ll try to join in if I can. I read this book years ago and enjoyed it, but I know I didn’t fully appreciate it at the time. I have the same Picador paperback you’ve pictured above. 🙂
