Eric Idle – Always Look on the Bright Side of Life: A Sortabiography

Yesterday I reviewed Eric Idle’s ‘Sortabiography’ for Shiny.   Read the full review here.

He and Michael Palin have always been my favourite Pythons, so I was fascinated to read Idle’s memoir. However, he remains a slippery character – self-deprecating, one who’d rather talk about his celebrity pals – George Harrison, David Bowie and so on than himself really.  But it does expose his business brain – he was the one that got the Pythons published, on record and so on, doing a lot behind the scenes…

Who is/was your favourite Python?

Picking a favourite Python is almost impossible! I adore Graham Chapman (“Burma”) and the sketch where he and Cleese visit Jean-Paul Sartre is priceless. Idle is of course brilliant and how he can remember and then spout some of his long speeches is beyond me. I have a fondness for Paiin too. No – it’s impossible!!! 😀

I like Palin, but I also have a soft spot for the multi-talented Terry Jones—actor, director, writer of children’s stories and, famously, a study of Chaucer’s Knight. (In fact, I see Wikipedia lists his occupations as actor, writer, comedian, film director, presenter (h that series on the Crusades), poet, historian, author

… Blast, pressed Send by mistake! Sad that he he is succumbing to a form of dementia—aphasia—in which he is losing, if not lost, the ability to remember words.

It’s so sad about Terry Jones’s illness – such a talented man, and probably the undersung hero of Python.
