One challenge ends, another begins: RIP XIII

The RIP Challenge is now in its thirteenth year! I’ve never signed up before, but the basic premise of this one should be a doddle for me given my penchant for dark books as autumn gets into full swing.

Find out the full details and participation levels of the challenge here.  The purpose of the R.I.P. Challenge is to embrace the autumnal mood and enjoy books that could be classified as:

  • Mystery
  • Suspense.
  • Thriller.
  • Dark Fantasy.
  • Gothic.
  • Horror.
  • Supernatural.

There are several levels of participation and I will commit to the lowest level of just one book, but hoping to read more.  Looking at my shelves, I have many candidates, here are a few:

Which would you pick first to read?

This sounds great! I haven’t read any of the books you’ve chosen except A Discovery of Witches (wasn’t a fan) but am most intrigued by The Girl In The Tower.

The Girl in the Tower is the second in a series based on Russian folk tales. I loved the first, The Bear and the Nightingale.

Although I normally shy away from fantasy and sci-fi, I am actually a big fan of the Harkness and Beckett series (as always with series, though, the first book is miles better than the others). I had seen someone else link to RIP and actually had no idea what it was. I have a little pile of scary books set aside for pre-Halloween reading in October, so maybe I should join in!

Like you, I’ve owned the Hardinge for so long but still haven’t got round to reading it, don’t know why I’m so reluctant to start it. Maybe my expectations for it are so high that I’m worried I may be disappointed?
