National poetry day today!

To celebrate National Poetry Day, dear Readers, I am going to subject you to a Gaskella original. I haven’t written a poem since I was at school over two decades ago, but inspired by events of earlier this week, I’ve had a go at writing not just one, but two (oh yes!) haiku.

Early October
screaming girls sing ABBA at
Juliet’s party.

A damp evening,
forty pounds doesn’t go far
at the fair.

Extremely amateurish, but I really enjoyed having a go. I had thought you were allowed 5, 7 & 5 syllables, but then I read Wikipedia on haiku, and found out that a Japanese ‘on’ is a sound rather than a syllable, but I’ve succeeded in getting a seasonal reference into both of them so I’m rather pleased!

Comments extremely welcome!
