The Joy of Found Bookmarks

We’re reading Vile Bodies by Evelyn Waugh for Book Group this month. I got this Green Penguin Modern Classics edition from a charity shop. I opened it up to find a read luggage tag with this written on it (in capitals):

NOTE
REAR TYRES WORN DOWN TO 2. MM
LEGAL LIMIT IS 1.6 MM.

?

Was this tag tied to the car keys after a service to prompt the owner to buy new tyres?  Or was it the car owner, having checked the tyre depth for themselves wanting to check the legal limit?  We shall never know, but it tickled me.

I love finding things falling out of books.

I’m not so keen on marginalia (unless it’s my late mother’s), but I will point you in the direction of a classic I posted about a few years ago here!

Have a good weekend.

I’ve often found tickets too. All these things lead us to imagine the life of the previous reader don’t they. And rather a ticket, photo or shopping list than lots of page corners turned down!

That looks like a note I might take down over the phone for my husband when the garage calls … and I would be likely to grab something like a luggage tag too. Found bookmarks are such fun, aren’t they? There could be a whole volume of stories inspired by them.
